DOXA 2015 review: Madame Phung’s Last Journey

    1 of 2 2 of 2

A singer croons a tear-jerker about the hardships of being gay. It’s not exactly what many people would consider family entertainment, yet that’s what it is for rural Vietnamese attendees of Madame Phung’s fair.

Filmmaker Tham Nguyen Thi documents the travelling troupe, which consists of LGBT entertainers who offer stage performances or host fairground games, as they set up and dismantle their outdoor set. Footage of their daily lives is interspersed with anecdotes about growing up queer, alternately punctuated by violent altercations and sexual overtures from locals.

While the pacing lags and the content leans too heavily on everyday banalities, the conflict between acceptance as performers and rejection as individuals provides an intriguing peek at rural Vietnamese society.
