Pitch Perfect 2 ends up slightly out of tune

Starring Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson. Rated PG.

The first Pitch Perfect was such a feel-good underdog of a movie, with likable leads and a wicked sense of female-friendly fun, that it’s a bummer to have to poop on the sequel’s party. So let’s hold off on doing that and focus on what still makes it worth a night out.

Rebel Wilson. She’s back as “Fat Amy”, one of the more shameless Barden Bellas. (Newbie alert: that’s the college a cappella troupe we’re following to glory again.) Her flirtation with rival Bumper (Adam DeVine) is now a full-on hookup fest, and while that subplot hits predictable notes, Wilson still gets all the best lines.

The musical numbers are just as sing-along-able. Elizabeth Banks, back as a colour commentator, got to direct the sequel. She shows a sure hand with the bigger crowds and the flashier numbers the Bellas perform in their bid to become world champs.

Their new rivals are an enjoyably domineering German troupe. A highlight has the Bellas facing off against them, Bumper’s troupe, and the Green Bay Packers (yes, real football players singing a cappella—and nailing it) in the basement of a deranged fan (David Cross). The new Bella (Hailee Steinfeld) is cute enough.

Now for the pooping. The sequel’s story line is a degraded copy of the original: instead of a Bella vomiting her way to on-stage infamy in the opening, Fat Amy gets fat-shamed for an on-stage wardrobe malfunction. Instead of Beca (Anna Kendrick) being reluctant to join the Bellas because she dreams of being a record producer, she gets an internship at a recording studio and kinda shafts the Bellas. (At least the sequel calls Beca out on her unoriginal mashups. But her original work isn’t much better.)

Jesse (Skylar Astin) is MIA for most of the film—a shame for ’shippers of his budding romance with Beca. The immigrant jokes and off-colour commentary come across less as satire and more as cheap shots.

Overall, you’ll have a good time watching Pitch Perfect 2, but you may feel queasy afterward. Sing it off, maybe?
