The Vancouver International Film Festival is adding a new award to the list of accolades it doles out.

VIFF announced on August 13 that it is collaborating with BC Creates, a communications initiative by B.C. creative industries, to present the VIFF Screen Industry Builder Award, an award intended to highlight individuals who have made significant contributions to the growth and success of B.C.'s creative economies and helped boost B.C.'s reputation as an international destination.

The Vancouver Board of Trade is hosting the 2015 award presentation luncheon, which will include a gala celebration and a private VIP fundraising reception, on October 1.

The inaugural award will go to Fiore Group CEO Frank Giustra, who was selected by the VIFF executive and board.

Giustra, who is from Vancouver, founded independent film company Lionsgate Entertainment, Fiore Music, and Westsonic Music. He is also a major shareholder of Thunderbird Films, which launched independent film distributor Soda Pictures Canada.

Giustra also founded the the Radcliffe Foundation, which supports local and international charities; is an executive member of the International Crisis Group, an NGO devoted to conflict prevention and resolution; and, with former U.S. president Bill Clinton, launched the Clinton Giustra Enterprise Partnership, which creates social and economic development programs in developing countries. He is a board member of Lionsgate Entertainment, Endeavour Mining, Petromanas Energy, Thunderbird Films, Clinton Giustra Enterprise Partnership, the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation, the International Crisis Group, and Streetohome Foundation.

Last year in VIFF awards news, VIFF expanded the Dragons and Tigers Award for Young Cinema, which was for new directors from Pacific Asia, to the Best New Director (International) award, opening it up to first- or second-time directors from around the world.

This year's festival, its 34th edition, will run from September 24 to October 9 and the 30th annual VIFF Industry Conference will run from September 29 to October 3.
