VIFF 2015: Love Among the Ruins has diminishing returns

      Love Among the Ruins (Italy)

A really sweet idea eventually turns slightly sour as some made-up Italian filmmakers pretend to unearth a forgotten silent movie seemingly spared a Second World War bombing.

The process of recovery and restoration—the real subject of this mildly ambitious mockumentary—remains interesting. But once we get to the alleged lost masterwork, a soporific and badly acted spy story from 1915, it displays little feel for the lyrical use of light and motion that made that era so special. The Artist it ain’t.
