VIFF 2015: Tough Love is compelling

      Tough Love (Germany)

German indie veteran Rosa von Praunheim’s stylized mix of documentary and low-budget reenactment isn’t for everyone, but the fact that he doesn’t care what you think of his style is part of his rude charm.

Mainly, the director has found compelling material in the story of Andreas Marquardt, a notorious pimp and thug who also worked in a funeral home and became a prize-winning martial artist.

In black-and-white recollections, which document horrific abuse at the hands of both parents, Hanno Koffler is magnetic as the bullheaded youngster who would survive to tell this bizarre tale—which would be cautionary if it could ever happen to anyone else.
