VIFF 2014: Songs She Wrote About People She Knows a Vancouver-set oddity

Songs She Wrote About People She Knows (Canada)

Amy Belling’s colour-rich camera work and Drew Shaffer’s kitschy production design are the principal reasons to catch this (mostly) Vancouver-set oddity, which stretches a funny short’s worth of material over an increasingly wearying 80 minutes. Arabella Bushnell offers a two-note performance as an angry secretary who (in order to “express” herself) leaves threatening messages for friends, family, and co-workers in the form of vaguely Kurt Weill-like songs. This prompts her boss (Brad Dryborough) to quit his job and spend the rest of the movie ranting while she sneers. Local musician Ross Smith has a nice turn as a harried record producer—ironic, because his own tunes, in real life, are more memorable than anything heard here.
