VIFF 2014: That’ll Leave a Mark gathers great Canadian shorts

      That’ll Leave a Mark (Canada)

Among these shorts looking at people receiving roughly 400 blows, the standouts, as often happens, come from Quebec. In the sepia-toned “Petit Frère”, a Big Brother works hard not to lose touch with his trouble-making charge. Best of all is Geneviève Dulude-Decelles’s 14-minute “The Cut”, ostensibly about a young girl giving her weekend-visiting dad an in-the-sink haircut. But it’s really about the family intimacy that’s increasingly hard to find.
