Veteran cinematographer Vic Sarin turns to his DOP colleagues for an endlessly fascinating, if initially somewhat disorganized, tour of key image makers of the past 50 years.

The visits with Italian genius Vittorio Storaro (The Conformist, Apocalypse Now) and English Coen brothers regular Roger Deakins are particularly revelatory. But all these sage cinematographers—male, older, and more or less white—tell good yarns, frequently illustrated by key clips. Having Asia’s burgeoning cinema represented here wouldn’t have hurt, but that actually helps make the case for turning this kind of Magic into a miniseries.
