VIFF 2016: Spirit Unforgettable

(Canada)

Pain, pride, and pleasure intermingle in Vancouverite Pete McCormack’s portrait of Spirit of the West frontman John Mann, seen coping with the early onset of Alzheimer’s disease and preparation for what could be the last tour with his fabled band.

McCormack has previously made tough-minded docs about Bruce Lee and Muhammad Ali, and here, in a well-paced film that screened once on HBO, he shows the singer—and his stalwart wife, Jill Daum, plus bandmates and long-time pals—in very good company indeed.
