Maya Deren + Jean Painlevé  After its primer on Canonical Surrealist Shorts, the Cinematheque follows up with the fabulously witchy work of Maya Deren, including the incantatory “Meshes of the Afternoon”. Stick around for Hans Richter’s “Dreams that Money Can Buy” in the second half of the evening, at the Cinematheque on Thursday (November 10).

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari  Mark Oliver brings his Oliver-Film Ensemble to the Cinematheque on Saturday (November 12) for live accompaniment to Robert Wiene’s still astonishing Expressionist masterpiece. The grandson of one of the film’s producers, Oliver will also introduce the film and “share some of his recent discoveries about Caligari’s mysterious origins.”

WarGames  The Cinematheque pulls of a remarkable coup—especially in light of certain developments to the south—with this screening on Sunday (November 13) of the 1983 popcorn classic, now looking a little darker than it ever did, with director John Badham in attendance. Besides WarGames, Badham’s impressive resume also includes Saturday Night Fever, Blue Thunder, and Stakeout.

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer  The Rio gets behind this welcome revival of John McNaughton’s grim little indie, made in 1986 but fondly remembered by those of us who witnessed mass walkouts at VIFF when it finally entered circulation in 1990. Screening Sunday (November 13).

A New Economy  As a salve for your post-election despair, catch this encore screening of Trevor Meier’s fine doc, which looks at a variety of fair, innovative, and sustainable business practices. At the Rio on Tuesday (November 15).

Snowden  Oliver Stone’s best film in a looooong time gets an encore screening at the Vancity Theatre on Wednesday (November 16).
