One of the world's accounting giants has issued a very public mea culpa for a monumental blunder at last night's Academy Awards.

The accounting giant PricewaterhouseCoopers apologized over Twitter to the movies Moonlight and La La Land, as well as to Faye Dunaway, Warren Beatty, and Oscar viewers around the world.

It came after Dunaway announced on live television last night that La La Land had won for Best Picture.

After the celebrations began and various people associated with La La Land gave acceptance speeches, the audience was told that an error had been made.

In fact, the Best Picture Oscar belonged to Moonlight. That's when people associated with this film went to the stage to accept their award.

PricewaterhouseCoopers revealed that the presenters, Dunaway and Beatty, "had been mistakenly given the wrong category envelope".

It was the Best Actress envelope, which said "Emma Stone La La Land".

Beatty read the card and paused for a long time before handing it over to Dunaway, who declared La La Land the winner.

"We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred," the accounting firm stated. "We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and [host] Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation."
