Canada's largest movie exhibitor is poised to construct an 11-screen multiplex on Vancouver's North Shore.

"After many years of searching for a new location in West Vancouver, we are extremely pleased to share the news that we are building this new theatre complex and our fourth VIP Cinemas experience in British Columbia at the Park Royal Shopping Centre," Cinexplex vice president of communications and investor relations Pat Marshall said in a news release.

The 44,000-square-foot facility will be developed on the south side of the mall.

It will include UltraAVX, D-Box Motion Seats, and VIP cinemas, which are adult-only and fully licensed.

The new theatre complex will be built on the south side of Park Royal.

The Squamish Nation owns the land and the Park Royal Mall is owned by Larco Investments Ltd., which is controlled by the low-profile Lalji family.

"The Squamish Nation is pleased to see a movie theatre return to Park Royal," Squamish Nation spokesperson Chris Lewis said. "We welcome this project and look forward to the installation of a significant piece of authentic Squamish Nation public art in the mall near the theatre entrance, which will celebrate its location on Squamish land."

The multiplex will be well situated to attract patrons from not only across the North Shore but also from the burgeoning Sea to Sky corridor, which has experienced a real-estate boom since improvements were made to the highway going toward Whistler.

It's the latest in a series of capital investments that Cineplex has made in the Lower Mainland, which include the new Marine Gateway multiplex in South Vancouver and the addition of a lounge and a new entrance to the Fifth Avenue Cinemas in Vancouver.

Under CEO Ellis Jacob, the company has aggressively moved to expand its media revenue, strengthen its own food and drink brands, and increase entertainment options within its theatres.

Meanwhile on the north side of Park Royal, B.C. Liquor Stores will soon open a new Signature retail outlet.
