Rogers Media is expanding its CityNews program across Canada, starting in September.

While the newscast is currently broadcast in Toronto and the Greater Toronto region, the expanded format will include versions produced locally in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Montreal.

Edmonton and Winnipeg newscasts will start on September 4 while the Vancouver, Calgary, and Montreal versions will begin in winter 2018.

The one-hour newscast will air seven days a week at 6 and 11 p.m. local time.

The newscast will mark the company's reemergence in the Vancouver market after Citytv shut down its Vancouver newsroom in 2006 when Bell Globemedia took over CHUM in a $1.7-billion deal.

The 2006 closure resulted in 47 people losing their jobs and the Citytv 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts in Vancouver being cancelled, in addition to a breakfast show in Victoria also being cancelled.

CityNews began in Toronto in 1975.
