Vancouver Week in Widescreen: The grossest movie ever

    1 of 3 2 of 3

KUSO  Mass walkouts at Sundance and an apoplectic review from Variety —“...like 90 minutes of a toddler sticking its stained finger in your face while giggling, “Looka my poopie!"—make this directorial debut by musician Flying Lotus a definite must-see when it debuts at Shudder.com, on Friday (July 21).

Is it, per the Guardian review, “the grossest movie ever”? Well, we’ve seen it and… uh, yeah, actually! It's definitely up there! Look for an interview with Flying Lotus in the next few days here at Straight.com

SOLARIS  From 1972, Andrei Tarkovsky’s sad and soulful sci-fi epic returns to the Cinematheque in a crisp new transfer, all the better to see all the detail in that swirling, sentient ocean of the title. Starts Friday (July 21)

POINT BREAK  From the dawn of Keanu, Kathryn Bigelow’s faintly Zen-gay pulse-quickener is still as exciting as it was in 1991, and so much more innocent and interesting than her more recent work for the Pentagon… At the Rio Theatre on Friday (July 21)

HEAVY METAL  Get baked and pretend its 1981 again in the animated presence of John Candy, Eugene Levy, Cheap Trick, Blue Oyster Cult and so much more, at the Rio, late (of course), on Saturday (July 22)

THE FILMMAKERS: THE SWEET HEREAFTER  A 10-week CBC series of canonical Canadian films begins with Atom Egoyan’s 1997 feature on Saturday (July 22). “It felt like a breakthrough,” is how critic Geoff Pevere describes The Sweet Hereafter in a 30-minute discussion preceding the film, which also features Straight contributor Adam Cook and Egoyan himself. Keep your eyes peeled for our interview with host Johanna Schneller.
