Celebrities mourn death of comedian Jerry Lewis

      Tributes are pouring in for Jerry Lewis, the 91-year-old comedian, actor, and humanitarian who died earlier today.

      Robert De Niro issued a statement calling Lewis a "pioneer in comedy and fim", as well as a friend.

      The two costarred with Sandra Bernhard in The King of Comedy, an offbeat 1982 film directed by Martin Scorcese in which successful comedian Jerry Langford (played by Lewis) is kidnapped.

      Lewis reached the pinnacle of the entertainment world in the late 1940s and 1950s alongside Dean Martin. The comedy duo became household names on TV and starred in a series of movies.

      Lewis also hosted an annual Labour Day weekend telethon to raise funds for muscular dystrophy over more than four decades.
