While tourists flock to the sights of Florence, Senegalese migrants follow the crowds to what they think will be a lucrative market to peddle handmade items and made-in-China trinkets.

But reality couldn’t be further from their dreams. While the average visitor disregards these people as irritants or troublemakers, Quebec filmmaker Hélène Choquette unveils their stories. These men are in a desperate bid for a better life, not just for themselves but for their families back home. In Italy, they face police pursuit, overt and systemic racism, almost zero job opportunities, meagre profits, and marginalization. In Senegal, they face strained relationships, familial pressures, and loss of face. As if that’s not enough, the economic downturn and refugee crisis have compounded pressures. Choquette covers a lot of ground within the thought-provoking film’s 70 minutes, but there’s clearly much material here worthy of further examination.
