VIFF 2017: Searching for a New Science looks for God in the particles

(U.K.)

You might think religion and science cancel each other out, but atheistically inclined filmmaker David Malone teams with Oxford physics and chemistry professor Ard Louis on a wide-ranging journey to find the places where, you might say, math and spirit meet—or “imagination allied with honesty”, as one tart observer puts it.

They travel to colourful places to discuss competing philosophies. Almost all are engaging, although it might be better if almost all weren’t older white men. Two notable exceptions are Nigerian poet Ben Okri and the awesome Jane Goodall, who connects with Louis, who, before becoming a theoretical physicist, spent part of his childhood around wild animals in East Africa. Recommended.
