VIFF 2017: A grandmother liberates herself in Czech Republic's Ice Mother

(Czech Republic)

    1 of 1 2 of 1

A widowed grandmother, Hana (Zuzana Kronerová), finds camaraderie, romance, and the opportunity to define herself on her own terms when she falls in with an unconventional bunch of elderly winter swimmers. Even her bullied, video game–addicted grandson finds himself eschewing his own family for the company of Hana and her new, chicken-toting boyfriend. However, Hana’s long-delayed self-discovery triggers latent tensions within the family, revealing the true character of her two bickering adult sons and their unhappy wives. A solid cast, natural narrative flow, and assured direction by filmmaker Bohdan Sláma make this domestic comedy-drama a bittersweet treat.
