Film industries and fans around the world are in shock and mourning after news broke that a Hollywood star has died.

Actor Chadwick Boseman was confirmed to have died today (August 28) after a four year battle with colon cancer.

He was 43 years old when he died at home in Los Angeles.

He rose to fame while portraying historical Black figures such as singer-songwriter James Brown in the 2014 bio-musical-drama Get On Up; and the first African American justice in the U.S. Supreme Court in the 2017 legal drama Marshall.

His death coincided with Major League Baseball celebrating Jackie Robinson Day. Boseman had portrayed Robinson, the first African American in Major League Baseball, in the 2013 biopic 42.

He achieved widespread fame when he played the Marvel Comics superhero Black Panther in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, before headlining The Black Panther in 2018. He reprised the role in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Black Panther became the first superhero film to receive a best picture nomination, and was the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to win Academy Awards.

Boseman also starred in films such as the 2019 action-thriller 21 Bridges and Spike Lee’s war drama Da 5 Bloods, released on Netflix in June.

Although he had not spoken publicly about his diagnosis, a statement on his official social media accounts today state that he had been diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016. While he had been fighting the cancer as it progressed to stage IV, he continued to film projects between surgeries and chemotherapy.
