In the Rumbling Belly of Motherland, Afghan-Canadian filmmaker Brishkay Ahmed reveals the ongoing dangers of reporting in Afghanistan through the perspective of media staff at Zan TV.

Zan TV, or Women’s TV, as it’s often referred to in the film, is a female-led news agency in Kabul. Through interviews, on-site reporting, and critical political analysis, Zan TV covers the news as it’s happening with the female standpoint in mind. While the conflict between the government, the Taliban, and the U.S. rages on, those not a part of the male patriarchy have their rights to work or engage in politics swept to the side, leaving women in an increasingly vulnerable position and fearful for their future in their homeland.

Ahmed and her all-female reporting team risk their lives to attend political events, capture footage in dangerous areas, and interview leaders of their government and the Taliban. The powerful male leaders must answer the question on the top of every woman’s mind: What about us?

The reporters put their roles as journalists above their comfort without a second thought. Their persistence in placing themselves in perilous situations to capture news is both inspiring and distressing throughout the entirety of the film. Each time a journalist heads into a crowded area, lined with armed soldiers and filled with pushing, loud men, the audience worries for her safety. Nevertheless, the Zan TV team charges on.

As one reporter heads off to grab footage, she states: “This is my duty. When I left home this morning, I asked my parents for forgiveness. Just in case something happens. In Afghanistan, death can arrive any time. This morning I kissed my parents hands, asked forgiveness, and left for work. I’ve accepted this work. I’m prepared for all outcomes.”

In the Rumbling Belly of Motherland illustrates journalism at its finest, and most harrowing.
