The Rio's July calendar includes cool flicks like The Warriors, Pulp Fiction, Zappa, and The Sparks Brothers

Now that the easing of COVID-19 restrictions has led to the reopening of movie theatres in B.C., it's time to take a look at what's coming up at the beloved Rio Theatre this month.

The first flick to catch our eye is The Warriors, which screens this Thursday (July 8) at 9:45 pm.

That's Walter Hill's action epic from 1979, about a New York street gang trying to escape from the Bronx and get back to its home turf of Coney Island after being framed for a murder. Who can forget the scene where the Warriors are set upon by the bat-wielding Baseball Furies? Go get 'em, Ajax!

And if that's not enough violence for ya, this Friday (July 9) at 10:30 pm the Rio brings you the brain-splattering brilliance of Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction.

There's too much good stuff to say about QT's second movie to start listing it all here, so suffice to say that if you miss it this Friday there's another showing next Monday (July 12) at 9:30 pm.

If old-school gang wars and brutal black comedy aren't your thing, one option is Zappa, director Alex Winter's 2020 documentary about musical genius and guitar hero Frank Zappa.

      Now there's an interesting guy.

And speaking of interesting guys, anybody remember the Mael brothers, Ron and Russell?

Back in the seventies they were the main members of an art-pop band called Sparks that scored the unlikely radio hit "This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both Of Us".

Apparently they've been at it ever since, and over the decades have been a major influence on the likes of Joy Division, Depeche Mode, Beck, the Smiths, and Sonic Youth.

There's a new documentary about them, which asks the question: "How can one rock band be successful, underrated, hugely influential, and criminally overlooked all at the same time?"

The Sparks Brothers is screening this Friday (July 9) at 7:30 pm and Sunday (July 11) at 3 pm.
