VIFF 2012 review: Annelie

(Germany/Switzerland)

In a memorable passage, historian Fernand Braudel once described how Europeans came to distinguish between the “deserving” and “undeserving” poor. Virtually all the inhabitants of the rundown Annelie Pension fall into the latter category, but that doesn’t mean they’re willing to be treated like yesterday’s wienerschnitzel. In his debut feature, Antej Farac goes to bat for a group of individuals who want to “Kiss” their troubles goodbye. It seems likely that Chancellor Angela Merkel would strongly disapprove.
