VIFF 2012 review: Like Someone in Love

(France/Iran/Japan)

Although often depicted as an anti-cinephile, Abbas Kiarostami demonstrated his love for the works of Yasujirô Ozu in his 2003 film, Five. This time around, it’s Ozu all the way: story, location, nation, generational conflict… Everything except for the great Iranian director’s own patented automobile conversations and reflection-painted windshields. Asian cinema’s reigning master of quietism pays tribute to his towering Japanese predecessor, and the results are nothing short of astonishing.
