Here’s everything new coming to CBC Gem in August 2021, including these shows highlighted by our critics.

The Great British Baking Show (Season 11)

The most recent season of the international television sensation arrives in Canada—on a tiered schedule, with new episodes available to Gem Premium subscribers August 6, and to all viewers August 15—with Little Britain’s Matt Lucas joining Noel Fielding on hosting duties, and Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood once again doing the judging. We have just one question: how did it take them this long to get to pineapple upside-down cake?

      The Bravest Knight

Expanded by Daniel Errico from his short film The Bravest Knight Who Ever Lived, this animated Hulu series about a knight called Sir Cedric (voiced by T.R. Knight) telling his daughter (Storm Reid) the tale of how he went from pumpkin farming to a life of adventure—and met his handsome prince (Wilson Cruz) along the way—is one of the first kids’ series to feature an openly gay character. And a lot of very talented people are involved, from Bobby Moynihan as the young Cedric’s troll pal Grunt to a supporting cast that includes Wanda Sykes, AJ McLean, RuPaul, Christine Baranski, Donna Murphy and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee. New episodes Saturdays from August 14

      Anne+ (Season 2)

In the second season of this Danish dramedy, Anne (Hannah Van Vliet) is still trying to figure herself out, and rolling back through her former relationships wondering what did and didn’t work. And creator Maud Wiemeijer continues to construct a rewardingly complex past and present for her young protagonist, whose path to proper adulthood—and contentment—is still revealing itself. If you haven’t seen the first season, you can watch the whole thing in a little over an hour. There’s plenty of time before the new episodes drop. August 20

      Eden

This eight-part Australian drama explores the fallout of a young woman’s disappearance in a small community in New South Wales. The cast includes Sophie Wilde, BeBe Bettencourt, The Flash’s Keiynan Lonsdale, and American Horror Story’s Cody Fern—everyone looks very pretty and seems to be hiding at least one dark secret. It’s that kind of show. August 20

Fred Whitfield in John Ware Reclaimed.

      Black Stories Collection

Launched on Emancipation Day, this collection of programming puts Black narratives front and centre, including the recent miniseries The Book Of Negroes and the feature film How She Move: new additions to Gem include John Ware Reclaimed, documentarian Cheryl Foggo’s look at the mythology of the eponymous Black cowhand, and Kenbe La: Until We Win, Will Prosper’s doc about Alain Philoctète, a Haitian artist and activist trying to improve conditions in his native country while also undergoing chemotherapy in Montreal. Available now
