What to watch on Crave in August 2020
Including Lovecraft Country, An American Pickle, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and a docuseries about the NXIVM sex cult

Lovecraft Country
Adapted from Matt Ruff’s acclaimed novel by Underground creator Misha Green and produced by Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams, this new HBO series stars Jonathan Majors as Atticus Black, a young man searching for his vanished father in the Jim Crow South of the '50s…where the racism is as old and terrifying as the actual monsters that lurk in the shadows. Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Michael Kenneth Williams and Courtney B. Vance co-star, and the images HBO has been teasing over the summer make this look absolutely fascinating. August 16
An American Pickle
So here’s a pitch: in 1919, Brooklyn pickle-factory worker Herschel Greenbaum (Seth Rogen) falls into a vat of brine…and emerges a century later to discover a very different America, where his slacker great-great-grandson (also Rogen) is his only link to his past. Written by Simon Rich (Man Seeking Woman) and directed by cinematographer Brandon Trost (The Disaster Artist, Can You Ever Forgive Me?), this looks like it could have been a left-field summer sleeper…and it still can be, you’ll just have to watch it at home. August 6
Star Trek: Lower Decks
Set in the universe of Star Trek: The Next Generation, this half-hour animated comedy promises to follow the antics of a handful of ensigns on the U.S.S. Cerritos—“one of Starfleet’s least important ships”—as they clean the holodeck, goof off, and complain about missing all that sweet Away Team action. Creator Mike McMahan comes from Rick And Morty, so he should be equally comfortable with weird science and awkward interpersonal stuff, and the voice cast features Tawny Newsome (Space Force), Jack Quaid (The Boys), Eugene Cordero (The Good Place), and Jerry O’Connell. August 6
The Vow
The story of the NXIVM (pronounced Nexium) self-empowerment sex cult in Upstate New York is now a documentary series directed by Jehane Noujaim and Karim Amer. The show promises to take an in-depth look at the lives of various members who were part of what U.S. federal prosectors dubbed a secret society of “sex slaves.” Members were infamously branded with founder Keith Raniere’s initials and the organization had several high-profile connections. After a seven-week trial, a Brooklyn jury found Raniere guilty of sex-trafficking, racketeering and forced labour, among other charges, last year. Several Canadians were caught up in the scandal, which has morphed into a lawsuit that claims millionaire Seagrams sisters Clare and Sara Bronfman had leadership roles. August 23
We Hunt Together
Produced for the fledgling U.K. crime channel Alibi, this six-part British series from Cheat’s Gaby Hull shifts its perspective between two pairs of colleagues: young lovers (Sea Fever’s Hermione Corfield, Baghdad Central’s Dipo Ola) on a murder spree, and the detectives (Torchwood’s Eve Myles, Into The Badlands’ Babou Ceesay) trying to stop them. Alibi hyped it as a 21st century take on True Romance, which honestly sounds like a pretty good idea…though we’re wondering if that means the characters will hallucinate Cliff Richard instead of Elvis. August 9
Love Fraud
Detropia and Jesus Camp documentary directing duo Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady’s four-part series about serial con man and bigamist Richard Scott Smith is hitting streaming after playing at Sundance and Hot Docs. The filmmakers found out about the case while it was still in progress, meaning the resulting series follows a group of his exes in real-time as they set out to track him down with help from “a chain-smoking, no-nonsense bounty hunter named Carla.” We’re all in. August 31
