What to watch on Disney Plus Canada in April 2021
Upcoming titles include Nomadland, The Kid Who Would Be King, and all six seasons of Lost
Once again, opur critics pick the best new movies and TV shows coming to Disney Plus Canada in April 2021.
Nomadland
It looks like movie theatres won’t be up and running for a while yet, so you’ll have to catch one of the most celebrated films of 2020 the same way we critics did: at home. Fortunately, Chloé Zhao’s intimate drama—starring Frances McDormand as Fern, a woman who joins the thousands of people chasing seasonal jobs up and down the American West—scales down just fine, exploring the community into which Fern is welcomed and finding compassion and understanding woven into its very fabric. You might enjoy it too. April 9
Solar Opposites (Season 2)
It took almost a year for the first season of this sci-fi sitcom—created by Rick And Morty’s Justin Roiland and Star Trek: Lower Decks’ Mike McMahan—to make it to Canada. Season 2 is arriving on the Star tier just a couple of weeks after it drops in the U.S., so those of us eager to see what new chaos awaits Korvo, Terri, Jesse and Yumyulack (voiced once again by Roiland, Thomas Middleditch, Mary Mack, and Sean Giambrone) won’t have to settle for YouTube clips. That’s nice. New episodes every Friday from April 9.
Lost
“Survivor, but scripted and somehow also sci-fi” is such a strange pitch for a TV series that it feels like a miracle that Lost was any good at all, let alone so compulsively watchable that it ran for six seasons, became a pop-culture fixture and still has people arguing about whether or not the finale was satisfying. (If you think the social-media arguments over the Easter eggs in WandaVision are a big deal, well, you should have seen Usenet message boards melting down with conspiracy theories when the first-season finale aired in May 2005.) Newbies may not be impressed by Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse’s groundbreaking flashback structure, which is now just a regular storytelling tool, but they can still enjoy watching the ensemble cast slowly reveal a host of winning, engaged performances from the likes of Josh Holloway, Evangeline Lilly, Dominic Monaghan, Henry Cusick, Daniel Dae Kim, and Yunjin Kim…while still stepping back and acknowledging that Terry O’Quinn as the show’s real star, both for his masterful deconstruction of steely survivalist John Locke and the things he does once Lindelof and Cuse move him into the endgame. And yes, the ending works just fine. April 23
The Kid Who Would Be King
A fantasy adventure about a London middle-schooler who pulls a sword from a stone and winds up charged with saving Britain from a resurgent Morgana Le Fay might not be the movie we were expecting from Attack The Block director Joe Cornish, but families looking for a distraction on a rainy weekend will be very happy it exists. A band of tweens (led by Louis Ashbourne Serkis, son of Andy) criss-crossing England to stop Rebecca Ferguson’s scheming Morgana? Yup. Angus Imrie’s goofy teenage take on Merlin? Big fun. Mild commentary on post-Brexit Britain for grown-up viewers? It’s all here, along with a climactic battle between our heroes and an army of the undead. Because you can take the director out of the monster movie, but you can’t take the monster movie out of the director. April 16
The Star Wars Ewok movies
Not all Star Wars properties are considered sacred. Some, like the Holiday Special, are buried deep in the Lucasfilm vault and spoken of only in hushed, snarky tones. And then there are the Ewok movies, meant to give the murderous teddy bears from Return Of The Jedi their own children’s franchise in the mid-'80s, as they come to the rescue of a stranded family of humans. Caravan Of Courage: An Ewok Adventure and Ewoks: The Battle For Endor are now part of the official Star Wars library, arriving on Disney Plus alongside the contemporaneous animated series produced by Toronto’s Nelvana studio and the first two seasons of Genndy Tartakovsky’s more recent Clone Wars series. Kids will like them, and adults will marvel at just how weird it is to see Paul Gleason—the very model of an asshole authority figure in The Breakfast Club and Die Hard—play a loving husband and father.
