On Our Radar: If you think the video for Jo Passed's orgy-like "MDM" is great, wait until you see the YouTube comments

Sometimes half the fun of YouTube is reading the comments, that holding true for “MDM” from new Sub Pop signee Jo Passed.

Vancouverites will be familiar with the project’s main man Jo Hirabayashi, whose deep roots in our city’s underground music scene include a stint in one-time Georgia Straight cover boys SSRIs.

Also familiar will be Jo Passed’s sound, which suggests an art-damaged reworking of early ’90s alt rock—you know, that brief post-Nirvana boom period where the weirdos took over the asylum with tags like grunge, slacker, math-rock, and plain old that’s fucked-up.

Right from the opening strains of “MDM” (off the  upcoming full-length Their Prime) you’re not going to hear a more deliciously warped guitar sound this year. And added accolades for a video—by director Eleanor Petry—that will get you thinking it’s really time to watch 2001: A Space Odyssey and/or The Shining again.

Which brings us to the comments section on YouTube. Highlights include gumbootiner’s “If there was a Sonic Youth, Pixies, Breeders and Warpaint orgy, the weird baby would be this song. BRAVO. New fan here.”

And LongBoarder Girl LLC’s “Im a foodie, and this is Great!”

And Münechild’s “Rock n roll makin a comeback with this one. Someone show this to Jack White ASAP.”

And Dave Tone’s “Eleanor Petry just gained a new fan, cool song too.”

Feel free to log on and chime in.
