What's In Your Fridge: Joshua Wells and Amber Webber of Lightning Dust

    1 of 3 2 of 3

What’s In Your Fridge is where the Straight asks interesting Vancouverites about their life-changing concerts, favourite albums, and, most importantly, what’s sitting beside the Heinz Ketchup in their custom-made Big Chill Retropolitan 20.6 cubic-foot refrigerators.

      On the grill

Amber Webber and Joshua Wells of Lightning Dust.

      Who are you

We are Lightning Dust! Amber Webber and Joshua Wells, most often joined by friends on stage and sometimes on record. We’re playing at the Cultch this Saturday June 2nd, where we’ll be joined onstage by Matt Skillings, Colin Cowan, Jenn bojm, Peggy Lee, and Meredith Bates. It’s gonna be a soft rager.

      First Concert

Amber: Young MC, PNE. Me and and my sister Ashley were too broke to go any regular concerts, so our Mom got us a PNE pass for our birthday in the early 90s and we went to every show at the Aquastage. We were completely psyched. I also remember seeing The Pursuit of Happiness that summer, which at the time I loved. Come to think of it, I think we probably just lived at every show cause we couldn’t help it!

Josh: Aside from my parents’ gigs—they were both musicians—Emmylou Harris, somewhere in Edmonton, 1980. My mom used to play her songs all the time so I really enjoyed it...until I fell asleep...cause I was five and it was past my bedtime.

      Life-changing concert

Nick Cave, The Warehouse, Toronto, 2010.  Insane show. We had both loved The Bad Seeds for a long time, and Amber had already seen him, but this was my first time. Raw power from a bunch of 50-year old men. No stopping that train. You can absolutely lose yourself in that depth of feeling, for miles.

      Top three records

Bob Dylan Blood On The Tracks  Harrowing and long lasting salty regrets.

Kate Bush Hounds Of Love  Amazing performances and production that has informed my approach to music for years.

Björk Debut  Inspiring, fully-realized, ecstatic love.

      All-time favourite video

Mick jagger and David Bowie "Dancing In The Streets"  Completely unhinged; so much cocaine. Just as good with the sound turned off!

      What in your fridge

At least 7 bottles of hot sauce. Addicted to them. Also purse-sized ones for travel. Marie Sharp makes a particularly good selection. Tequila Beet stuff from Sriracha Revolver. El Diablo is good. Sometimes just some leftover to go sauce containers from Bandidas or Jamjar. We’re more about flavour and smoke than absolute heat.

Two jars of pickle juice, no pickles. Need to remember to buy some more of those.

Liquid brain adjuster. You figure it out.

Playing a hometown show for the first time in nearly two years, Lightning Dust will debut new material and reinterpret old favourites with an intimate show at the Cultch on Saturday (June 2). For tickets and more info, go here
