Southern-rock icon Dickey Betts has been hospitalized after a freak accident at his home in Sarasota County, Florida.

According to a post on Betts' Facebook page, the 74-year-old guitarist slipped while playing with the family dog in his backyard and cracked his head.

Betts has been sedated at a local hospital following the accident Monday night at the home he shares with wife Donna. He is listed in critical but stable condition, according to his longtime friend and manager, David Spero.

‘The family appreciates all of your thoughts and prayers during this very trying time.” Donna says in the post. “Dickey is a notorious fighter and he is displaying that now!”

Brain surgery, to relieve swelling, has been scheduled for Friday.

Betts had suffered a mild stroke at his Sarasota home last month, forcing him to cancel upcoming tour dates, but a Facebook post last week said that he was "raring to go" and had "already started playing his guitar again."
