Voice teacher analyzes Devin Townsend's singing; spoiler alert: turns out he's really good
As you might have noticed, Vancouver is home to many talented musicians. On the heavy-music front, Devin Townsend has been way out in the front of the pack for decades. Not only can the dude shred on the guitar like a mofo, he has one hell of a voice and he knows how to use it.
Townsend was a natural subject, then, for one of YouTuber Sam Johnson's videos. The Arizona-based Johnson is a voice teacher with an ongoing video series in which he offers commentary on the styles and techniques of various singers.
For his installment on Townsend (posted below), Johnson selected a live-in-studio performance of the song "Kingdom" recorded for the official YouTube channel of the guitar-pickup manufacturer EMG, Inc.
Johnson praises Townsend's "really good dynamic control", noting his ability to switch back and forth between heavy-metal screams and clean, near-operatic singing without exerting undue pressure on his vocal cords.
"It's really cool," Johnson notes, "and he's making it look so easy."
The voice teacher's conclusion? "Gosh, he's really good."
We coulda told you that, Sam!

Townsend's most recent release is Ocean Machine—Live at the Ancient Roman Theatre Plovdiv, which came out this past July. You can download his book, the concisely titled How to Develop Creativity & Excel as a Successful Independent Songwriter in a Changing Industry, here.
