On Our Radar: video for Art d'ECCO's "Mary" captures the meditative beauty of graveyards in glorious black and white

Assuming you haven’t been mentally scarred forever by Night of the Living Dead, Return of the Living Dead, The Omen, Creepshow, Phantasm, and House by the Cemetery, there’s something cool about graveyards. And we’re not just talking about the leaf-strewn weeks leading up to Halloween.

Think of them as meditative sanctuaries in a world filled with endless white noise. Or a place to pause and think not only about those who have come before us, but also the reality that one day we’re all leaving this planet.

Shot in glorious black and white by director Kira Clavell, the video for Art d’ECCO’s wonderful space-glam oddity “Mary” (from his new full-lenth Trespasser) starts out innocently enough on a playground where time seems to be moving backwards.

But after a quick trip to the liquor store, it’s off to the cemetery for a ceremonial letter-burning. An afternoon under a tree then leads to some drinking and, presumably, deep thinking.

Speaking of which, if you don’t have time to pop by Mountain View Cemetery with a 40-pounder of Sailor Jerry this weekend for an hour or two of reflection, pop the top and settle in here for three minutes and 16 seconds. Rest assured that “Mary” is artfully done enough that you’re almost guaranteed to avoid anything resembling a PTSD graveyard flashback.

Unless, that is, you’ve been mentally scarred forever by Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things.
