Dave Mustaine announces throat cancer diagnosis

Megadeth frontman—and certifiable metal legend—Dave Mustaine has announced that he’s been diagnosed with throat cancer.

The 57-year-old made the news public on Instagram, noting that treatment has already begun, and that he’s feeling good about the odds of a full recovery.

“It’s clearly something to be respected and faced head on, but I’ve faced obstacles before,” he said in the post. “I’m working closely with my doctors, and we’ve mapped out a treatment plan which they feel has a 90% success rate.”

The health setback means that all Megadeth tour dates in the immediate future will be cancelled.

First rising to prominence in the early ’80s, Megadeth was—along with Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax—considered be part of metal’s Big Four, which was shorthand for a gold-standard mixtape favourites of anyone whose wardrobe consisted of jean jackets, a mackinaw shirt, and Daytons.

In the past, Mustaine has dealt with alcoholism, and spent years smoking—both of which are known to contribute to throat cancer.

In 2016 he Tweeted the following: “I don’t smoke cigarettes anymore. It was a very bad decision for me to smoke as a singer and I regret it.”

As far as the drinking goes, Mustaine, who was fired from Metallica in the early ’80s for alcoholism, drug abuse, beligerent behavior, and personality clashes with the band’s founding members, has obviously managed to reign things in.

In 2016 he Tweeted, “I don’t do drugs, I have a beer and wine co., so I do drink, but I’m not a drunk, and I believe in God.”

Here is his full Instagram post.

I’ve been diagnosed with throat cancer. It’s clearly something to be respected and faced head on - but I’ve faced obstacles before. I’m working closely with my doctors, and we’ve mapped out a treatment plan which they feel has a 90% success rate. Treatment has already begun. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Unfortunately, this requires that we cancel most shows this year. The 2019 Megacruise will happen, and the band will be a part of it in some form. All up to date information will be at megadeth.com as we get it. Megadeth will be back on the road ASAP. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Meanwhile, Kiko, David, Dirk and I are in the studio, working on the follow up to Dystopia – which I can’t wait for everyone to hear. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m so thankful for my whole team – family, doctors, band members, trainers, and more. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’ll keep everyone posted. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ See you soon, Dave Mustaine
