On Our Radar: We Found A Lovebird make a collage of Vancouver in hypnotic “Without Regard” video

Sometimes all it takes to make a great music video is setting up a camera at a busy intersection. Vancouver indie-rock band We Found A Lovebird’s latest video for “Without Regard” is rather uneventful, but when you take the themes of the song into consideration, stands out as something pretty powerful.

“The song is about how local knowledge goes a long way, especially when it comes to shortcuts, weather and love,” said frontman Larry Lechner in a press release for the clip.

Lechner’s absolutely right, of course. If you’re a longtime Vancouverite, how many times have you been saved by the permanent imprint of the SkyTrain map in your brain, a strategically placed alcove to duck into and wait out a rainstorm, or knowledge of the perfect bar to bring your latest Tinder match to? It’s all important if you want to avoid becoming one of the silhouetted zombies trudging across the intersection in the video.

The video also superimposes silhouettes of the four members of the band against a slowly changing traffic light, spindly leafless trees and an illegible overhead street sign. The cars pass by as the silhouettes periodically duplicate, exploding outwards to give the impression of walking pedestrians – a kid with a backpack, a guy in a baseball cap staring at the ground with his hands in his pockets, a woman with a puffy winter coat.

The band keeps playing, and the hustle and bustle of city life never stops. The shading of the video shifts back and forth from a cold blue-gray hue to a fiery orange, as if multiple days were passing over the course of its four-minute runtime.

And what better musical accompaniment to sit there staring, contemplating the various routines of your daily life, than the calming, dreamy vocals of Lechner and the slowly strummed indie-rock chords that back him up. Who says Vancouver has to be “No Fun City” when you’re here long enough to learn its ins and outs?
