Halloween music countdown 2019: Screamin' Jay Hawkins meets Arsenio Hall

    1 of 2 2 of 2

Screamin' Jay Hawkins had a role in Jim Jarmusch's 1989 film Mystery Train, which was as good an excuse as any for the original shock rocker to sing his signature song, "I Put a Spell on You", on The Arsenio Hall Show.

This performance is a time capsule of another era, complete with Hakwins lighting a cigarette mid-song and exchanging banter with Emo Philips.

The versions by Creedence Clearwater Revival and Nina Simone have their adherents, but nine times out of 10, I'd rather hear "I Put a Spell on You" grunted and shrieked by the man who wrote it.
