The Band to release super-deluxe 50th anniversary box set of its eponymous second album this month

When the Band released its second album in September of 1969 I didn't pay much attention. All I cared about was listening to the Beatles' Abbey Road, which came out the same week My 12-year-old ass was only concerned with hearing poppy numbers like "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" and "Octopus's Garden" over and over again till my parents had to shut it down.

My total infatuation with the Fab Four might have led me to miss some other musical gems at the time, but in recent years I've made up for it by going back and checking out early recordings by groups like the Band. Similarly minded folks may want to add a special upcoming reissue to their Christmas wish-lists.

Universal Music Canada has announced that on November 15 it will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Band's self-titled masterpiece with a newly remixed and expanded "super-deluxe" boxed set edition that features previously unreleased outtakes and alternate recordings from The Band sessions, as well as the group's performance at Woodstock, which has never been officially released. The package includes two CDs, a Blu-ray, two vinyl LPs, a 7-inch vinyl, and a hardcover book.

      Here's some promotional bumph:

"Dressed like 19th century fire-and-brimstone preachers and singing rustic, sepia-toned songs about America and the deep south, the Band--Garth Hudson (keyboards, piano, horn), Levon Helm (drums, vocals, mandolin), Richard Manuel (keyboards, vocals, drums), Rick Danko (bass, vocals, fiddle) and Robbie Robertson (guitar, piano, vocals)--was an enigma, unlike any group that came before or after. And their self-titled Brown Album, as it would lovingly be called, cemented their status as one of the most exciting and revolutionary bands in years, on the strength of now-classic songs like 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down', 'Up On Cripple Creek' and 'Rag Mama Rag'."
