The nominations for the 42nd annual Juno Awards were announced on February 19, with B.C. musicians represented across a wide variety of categories. Mission’s Carly Rae Jepsen leads the pack with five nods, including one for single of the year for her mega-hit “Call Me Maybe”.

Indie-pop group Said the Whale, which won in 2011 for new group of the year, is up for alternative album of the year (Little Mountain), and faces off against Hannah Georgas and Japandroids, as well as Metric and Stars.

“You look at the majority of the artists nominated for the big awards and it’s, like, Justin Bieber, Marianas Trench—bands that are playing arenas,” Said the Whale guitarist Tyler Bancroft told the Straight. “But then there’s this handful of bands like us that are still totally grinding it out in the van across the country, and go to the States and play for 20 people in a shitty bar, but then are getting recognized at this level that is on par with these artists that are superstars. It’s a totally crazy feeling.”

Other local representation includes West Coast rappers Madchild and SonReal, both nominated for rap recording of the year, plus Vancouver-raised Grimes and the Pack a.d. in the breakthrough categories.

The Junos take place April 21 at the Brandt Centre in Regina.

Thanks Georgia Straight for writing about the three bands you know and giving this article a snarky headline that makes no sense. How about giving props to Cory Weeds? Five Alarm Funk? Devin Townsend? The VSO? How insulting.
