What's In Your Fridge: Humans

    1 of 2 2 of 2

What’s in Your Fridge is where the Straight asks interesting Vancouverites about their life-changing concerts, favourite albums, and, most importantly, what’s sitting beside the Heinz Ketchup in their custom-made Big Chill Retropolitan 20.6-cubic-foot refrigerators.

      HUMANS

      Who are you

Peter Ricq: I was named Peter by mother, she named me after her first doll. I am also known as one half of HUMANS. Ricq is my last name, it’s a French name from France but there are very few of us there and anywhere else in the world really.

Robbie Slade: I am a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and vocalist from Vancouver via the most beautiful place in the world—Nelson, B.C.

      First concert

Peter: I wish my parents took me to some concerts when I was growing up—my mother saw Led Zeppelin at some point, but I missed all that. My first show was 311 in Montreal at Metropolis, I was 15 or 16, and it was a Wednesday night. I had a blast and I remember the next day in school, my friends and I’s ears were ringing with 311 beats from the night prior. We would look at each other while the class was in session and laugh—we were all bopping our heads at the same time.

      Life-changing concert

Robbie: Active Child at Symbiosis in 2013. It was so beautiful. He was playing the harp and it was sunset. it was almost too perfect. Then Jabba the Hutt’s sand-yacht came over the hill and we all piled on and listened to drum and bass. There were drugs.

      Top three records

Peter: Nevermind Nirvana  I know it’s cliche but there’s a reason why a lot of people would pick that record. That album changed the world of pop music. I remember the first time I saw the “Smells like Teen Spirit” video on MuchMusic, I was 10 years old and said to myself “Finally some real music! Why doesn’t everyone do this, there’s no bullshit here!” Maybe not those exact words but...yeah. That day, my mother took me shopping and I only bought striped shirts.

Robbie: Helen "Witch" I love how incredibly offside the production is on this B-side of "Zanzibar", originally released in 1983.

Peter: Daft Punk Homework  I started getting into the rave scene in Montreal in 1997. There were a ton of live electronic bands getting real momentum like Underworld, Prodigy, AIR, Chemical Brothers, and Daft Punk. Daft Punk’s Homework is the the only record from that list which I still listen to every so often. When I was 17, Daft Punk was headlining a RAVE in Montreal, I really wanted to go but ended up eating ice cream and going to bed. I always think about that from time to time, it sucks.

      All-time favourite video

Robbie: R. Kelly "Happy Birthday" Why is it my favourite video? because I can’t tell if he’s joking and the whole thing is staged and he is brilliant, or if he’s dead serious and it's like a bad found-footage horror movie. It's seriously pretty good.

Other great videos: Kanye West "Runaway" (Reminds me of my first real Canadian white Christmas.) Lil Jon and DJ Snake "Turn Down for What" (It's flawless.)

Peter: Twisted Sister “We’re Not Gonna Take It” My mother used to watch MuchMusic non-stop when we were kids. I probably remember this wrong but here goes. My brother and I were really young and hardly knew how anything worked, not even a TV remote. We would sit in front of the television and watch shitty music videos one after another, waiting, hoping the next one would be sick. Whenever Twisted Sister's video came on with the dad in the video saying, “What are you gonna do with your life?”, and the reply from his son, “I wanna rock”, I loved it and couldn’t get enough of it. Then we discovered how to use the remote and started watching Knight Rider and basically anything else on TV. Again, I probably remember this wrong.

      What’s in your fridge

Robbie: Lemons, ginger, an apple. Usually I have an obsession with juicing. I start every morning with one lemon and a large chunk of ginger’s output straight from my juicer. If I’m feeling sweet I’ll throw in a carrot or an apple, but the lemon-ginger is a real kick in the balls. I feel like fighting a donkey afterwards. It's really intense but gadamn!! Seriously try it. Another prize area of my ktichen is my little indoor herb garden. I love making pasta sauce from scratch!

Robbie: Leftover takeout. Now that Peter and I are on tour every weekend, and I have a demanding work week with the micro real-estate developer I work for, I usually have takeout leftovers in my fridge.

Peter: Zing Tang. Dougal Bain McLean and Roy Vizer of Jon and Roy started a hot sauce brand called Zing Tang last summer. It’s quite delicious and I eat it pretty much every day with my breakfast or when I have a ripe avocado that needs to be eaten (avocado and Zing Tang hot sauce—that’s it). I also have about eight avocados in the fridge.

Peter: Frozen bananas. I love smoothies—it’s like a drug. Each time I’m out and I see smoothie on a menu, I need to order it. At home, I make myself banana smoothies a lot—it’s like natural ice cream.

HUMANS' new record is called Noontide.
