My Favourite Thing: Shane Koyczan

    1 of 1 2 of 1

My Favourite Thing is a video feature where the Georgia Straight gets interesting folks from around town to list off, among other things, their favourite performers, live gigs, and singers. And, of course, their favourite thing.

Acclaimed spoken word artist, poet, and author Shane Koyczan has just come off the heels of a sold out coast-to-coast Canadian tour, and last week he set aside some time to tell the Straight about a few of his favourite things.

He's teamed up with folk musicians Short Story Long again for his forthcoming album, Debris, which will be released through his website on September 25. His previous album with the group, Remembrance Year, featured his poem "To This Day", which went viral on YouTube and surpassed 16 million views. Koyczan's poem "Move Pen Move" was also featured on Dan Mangan's Roboteering EP.

Koyczan's next show in the Lower Mainland will be held at Mission's Clarke Theatre Foundation on October 18.

Check out some of his work here.

Shane, that was an absolute delight to watch. You seem like a great guy. I will definitely check out what you have on the market.
I applaud your move to sell your 'stuff' from your website in the midst of dumping Spotify et al.

I hope this finds you well and happy!

      Good luck!!!

      How strange!!

I profess a liking for the guy, mention that I will check out his performances (I did. Great stuff! Will buy!) and that I applaud him for not giving his work away - basically for free - to the likes of Spotify et al.

I get three thumbs down in the popularity contest?
Were the thumbs down courtesy of industry shills, consumers who want their art for free or from those that are embarrassed by effusive praise?
