Spirit of the West joins Bryan Adams, Michael Bublé, and Sarah McLachlan in getting its own star on Granville Street’s “Star Walk on Theatre Row”. The Celtic folkers will be inducted into the B.C. Entertainment Hall of Fame during their annual St. Patrick’s Day show at the Commodore Ballroom next Saturday (March 15), something that frontman John Mann hardly would have expected when the band first convened 31 years ago.
“Yeah, I don’t think we were thinking about that back then. I think we were just waiting for the next beer, to be honest,” Mann told the Straight. On the same night, Mann himself will also receive the Beautiful Heart Award from the Access to Music Foundation (formerly the Music B.C. Charitable Foundation) for his work with Bulembu International, among other things. The Vancouver-based not-for-profit group is dedicated to improving conditions for Swazi children orphaned by AIDS. Mann’s visit to the town of Bulembu in 2010 yielded the Spirit of the West song of the same name, which you can sample on YouTube—or, better still, hear live next week.
