Gob spits up new record

It’s been close to seven years since Fraser Valley–grown outfit Gob delivered Muertos Vivos, but the punk-pop-leaning group is about to get back in the game with the release of its next album, Apt. 13, on August 26.

The band’s bicoastal nature and its decision to self-produce are among several factors that stalled the new effort.

“When you’re producing it yourself, it’s hard to crack the whip,” guitarist-vocalist Tom Thacker told the Straight from his New York home, noting that work on the album began in 2010. “You want to take a break, go for a walk, or watch a movie.”

Though Thacker talks up a Beach Boys–meet–Rocky Horror number called “Can’t Get Over You”, the LP’s first teaser is the power-chord-heavy rock cut “Cold”, which encapsulates his time travelling both with Gob and as a guitarist in Sum 41. “I was jumping back and forth from band to band. It takes the love out of it. It’s just a contemplative song about feeling cold on the road,” Thacker explained.

A record-release show is set for the Imperial on August 22.
