Beck at Deer Lake Park

Every time there’s an announcement that Beck is coming to town, a certain Straight staffer whom we’ll call Steve N.—or, on second thought, let’s call him S. Newton—goes all frothy.

“World’s greatest living rock guitarist, Chucklebunch,” he’ll say. “Beck’s version of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers’ fuckin’ rules, dude.”

Then, when he finds out that it’s not Jeff Beck coming to play a concert in Vancouver, but mercurial modern-music genius Beck Hansen (he of “Loser”, “Where It’s At”, and, uh, “MTV Makes Me Want to Smoke Crack” fame), Steve N.—I mean S. Newton—suddenly loses interest.

“Sucks, dudes,” he’ll announce, then trundle back into his office to listen to Blow by Blow one more time.

We have a feeling we won’t be seeing him at Deer Lake Park when Beck (Beck Hansen, we mean, not the British geezer who inspired Spinal Tap’s Nigel Tufnel) plays there on Tuesday (August 19). Given that Rolling Stone called Hansen’s latest album, Morning Phase, “an instant folk-rock classic”, however, you can bet your pristine first-pressing vinyl copy of Beck-Ola that we’ll be there.
