In addition to the release of his new album Club Meds, local singer-songwriter Dan Mangan’s big week also included a pair of nominations for this year’s Canadian Screen Awards. He and collaborator Jesse Zubot were given a nod for their original score for the Simon Pegg vehicle Hector and the Search for Happiness, while Mangan was also saluted in the original-song category for “Wants”, which appeared in the Prairie-set drama The Valley Below.

Reached by the Straight in Toronto, Mangan said the double nom was “pretty rad” but humbly pointed out how integral Zubot was to the Hector score. “When they hired me, I confessed, ‘So… I can’t write music, but I want to work with my friend who is a genius,’ ” he said.
