Black Sabbath's Vol. 4 to get super-deluxe vinyl box-set treatment. That's the one with "Supernaut" people!

If you ask somebody what their favourite Black Sabbath song is, they'll most likely name one of the band's heavily played singles, like "Paranoid" or "Iron Man". Others may point to the atmospheric number that started it all, the eerie "Black Sabbath". And then there's the Ronnie James Dio fans who are all over "Heaven and Hell".

Me, I'm a "Supernaut" kinda guy.

When I interviewed Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi back in 2007 I told him I was particularly fond of the track from 1972's Vol. 4, and he offered an interesting reply.

“You know who did like that?” he said, “Frank Zappa. That was one of his favourite tracks. He always said, ‘Aw, I love that riff.’ In fact, I used to play it for him when he’d come down, you know."

Anybody else who's obsessed with "Supernaut" should probably knows that it's available in five versions--the original album cut, two outtakes, an alternative take, and a live version--on a new super-deluxe vinyl box-set edition of Vol. 4 scheduled for release by Rhino Records on February 12.

The new collection--which is also available digitally and on CD--includes a newly remastered version of the original album along with 20 unreleased studio and live recordings, a booklet featuring liner notes with quotes from all four band members, rare photos, and a poster with previously unpublished early artwork of the album using the working title Snowblind.

The bonus material includes six previously unreleased studio outtakes from the original album sessions as well as 11 additional studio recordings that spotlight alternative takes, false starts, and snippets of studio dialogue. The box set also features live performances recorded at various stops along the band’s 1973 U.K. tour.

      You can preorder it here.
