Concerts at the Pier brings free live music to White Rock

A free concert series in White Rock will be bringing music to the seaside.

Concerts at the Pier is returning with five planned shows through July and August, spanning genres from classic rock and ‘80s pop to toe-tapping country.

“We are thrilled to be putting on another year of memorable concerts,” says White Rock BIA chair Leah Chandler in a statement. “We are delighted to see their growing popularity with many people adding Concerts at the Pier to their summer must-attend events list.”

This year’s concerts kick off on July 4 with a hometown show from rock stalwarts 54-40. A week later, eight-album country star Crystal Shawanda brings the blues. Tribute acts to ABBA & The Chicks play on July 25.

Vancouver ‘80s rockers Barney Bentall & the Legendary Hearts play on August 22, while Bob Seger and Bruce Springsteen tributes round out the series on August 29.

The concerts take place close to White Rock beach—at either Memorial Park or Grand Chief Bernard Robert Charles Memorial Plaza Parking Lot—and are named for the city’s iconic pier.

Notably, the local landmark was washed away in a 2018 storm. It re-opened the following year, only to shortly be shuttered again due to Covid. Last July, parts of the pier and promenade were damaged by a backhoe backing onto the wooden structure. These kinds of things just happen to 109-year-old piers.
