On Our Radar: Bratboy is the coolest, most stylish supergroup in town

Bratboy is releasing its debut studio album Bratworld on April 21 and celebrating with a sold-out show at Green Auto on April 22.

It’s not just the cherry bomb punk of singles like “Blue Eyes,” “Cuff Love,” and “Victoria”—which channel the energy of a modern-day Runaways—that has built such anticipation for a full length record’s worth of songs from Bratboy. It’s also the sheer breadth of talent and artistry behind it all.

Bella Bébé and Megan Magdalena have been longtime fixtures of Vancouver’s music scene. Both have played in handfuls of great bands—including Jo Passed and bb, the former iteration of this group—and Magdalena is a photographer of local legend status. With the addition of drummer Tony Dallas, of the post-hardcore outfit SSRIs, to the lineup, Bratboy is probably the coolest supergroup in town.

Not to mention the most visually stylish, too. Often seen on stage in vintage-inspired costumes like tasseled bodysuits, Bébé and Magdalena’s creative vision also translates to their music videos. Just take “Victoria,” for example. Clad in ‘60s mod leather and leopard print, Bébé, Magdalena, and Dallas are secret agents on a mission in a fun tribute to spy B-movies.

It’s this combination of virtuosity, style, and attitude that makes Bratboy so exciting—and so much fun.
