Peter Frampton has been displaying his prowess on guitar since his days with Humble Pie in the early seventies, but many music fans still know him best as the cute AF pop star of his multiplatinum Frampton Comes Alive era.

Back in 2007 Frampton's considerable skills on the fretboard were widely acknowledged when his instrumental guitar album, Fingerprints, won the Grammy for best pop instrumental album.

Now the British rock legend has announced a second instrumental album, the apt-titled Frampton Forgets the Words, which will be released by Universal Music on April 23.

One of the tracks on the upcoming disc is a cover of "Loving the Alien", a 1984 song by David Bowie, who Frampton had known since childhood. The two attended art school together in Bromley, 12 miles south of London

“When I was 11 or 12 we used to bring acoustics to school and jam on the art block stairs during lunchtime,” Frampton told me back in 1987, before performing with Bowie in Vancouver on the Glass Spider Tour. “There was a nice echo there, ya see.”

Here's a clip of Bowie performing "Loving the Alien" on the Glass Spider Tour, with Frampton stepping out to provide a kick-ass guitar solo at the 5:20 mark:

As well as the David Bowie tune, Frampton Forgets the Words includes covers of songs by Radiohead, Stevie Wonder, George Harrison, and Lenny Kravitz, among others.

"This album is a collection of ten of my favorite pieces of music," says Frampton on his website. "My guitar is also a voice and I have always enjoyed playing my favorite vocal lines that we all know and love. These tracks are my great band and me paying tribute to the original creators of this wonderful music."

Here's the official video of Frampton performing Radiohead's "Reckoner":
