Pixies and Modest Mouse announced for Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre on September 9

Three giants of the ’90s-era alternative nation have banded together for a package tour bringing the Pixies, Modest Mouse, and Cat Power to the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre on September 9.

The official party line is that Portland-spawned Modest Mouse and the Boston-formed Pixies are coheadlining, the former starting out on K Records and eventually going mainstream-platinum with 2004’s Good News for People Who Love Bad News, the latter one of the most influential bands in the history of alt-rock. (Dispute that Pixies all you want Bootsauce fans, but not until you’ve read about how Kurt Cobain based his most famous songs on Black Francis’ loud-quiet-loud template perfected on landmark albums like Surfer Rosa).

As for Cat Power, there’s an argument to be made that she’s every bit as deserving of a co-headliner slot, with Moon Pix still one of the most haunting, moving, and generally transcendent records of the ’90s indie-rock boom. Added bonus—after years of putting on live shows that might have charitably been described as erratic, Chan Marshall proved together, engaged, and all-round happy when she played the Vogue last summer.

Modest Mouse staged a successful two-night stand at the Commodore last November, and the Pixies continue to write and record new material with 2022’s Doggerel, the band’s fourth full-length since reuniting in the 2000s.

Tickets go on sale Friday (March 31) at 10 a.m. here.
