Swedish metal kings Meshuggah to play Vancouver this fall
Swedish metal titans Meshuggah will make their first Canadian appearance in five years at Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre on November 25. Announced by Live Nation this morning, the show will also feature Nordic metal icons In Flames and Knoxville deathcore unit Whitechapel.
Meshuggah hits the road in North America in support of its ninth studio album, Immutable, which starts out with the metronome-thump prog of “Broken Cog” and wraps with the meditative post-apocalypse soundscape “Past Tense”. In a nod to the group’s mid-’80s roots, the record is not only available on streaming services and CD, but also vinyl and retro-riffic cassette. Immutable follows up the Grammy-nominated full-length The Violent Sleep Of Reason.
While Meshuggah has never had a chart-topping hit in North America, the band has built a rabid cult-following.
In an interview with hysteriamag.com, guitarist Mårten Hagström described the creation of Immutable as follows:
“There was also a deliberate stance from me to not make it sound like too much of a ‘jerk off’. I didn’t want the album to be a circus act where we try and do the trickiest stuff possible; when you’re 50, that is no longer the focus, which is really cool. The focus changed to how I can write Meshuggah songs with all the weirdness and unpredictability of what’s supposed to be there, but also writing tracks where people who did not originally get into our music, can actually absorb and enjoy it.”
Tickets are available today through Meshuggah presales, with general tickets on sale on Friday (July 14) at 10am at livenation.com.
