Vampire Weekend’s first tour in five years includes a Vancouver stop

Vampire Weekend continues its long ascension from Brooklyn buzz band to arena-packing heavyweights with a North American tour that includes a Lower Mainland stop. The New York City group led by singer-songwriter Ezra Koenig will play Burnaby’s Deer Lake Park on June 18, with tickets going on sale February 23.

The date is part of a schedule that will have the indie heavyweights playing Boston’s TD Garden, Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, and NYC’s Madison Square Garden. It marks Vampire Weekend’s first extended round of touring in five years.

This April will see the release of the band’s fifth full-length, Only God Was Above Us, the record shaped partly by what’s been described, somewhat vaguely, as a “20th-Century New York City aesthetic.” Musically, fans can expect something adventurous, Koenig exploring a path influenced by classical Indian raga—his interest sparked by taking singing lesson in rural Japan.

Don’t worry, we’re a little confused by that, too—but let’s just go with it, because Vampire Weekend hasn’t got to where it is today by playing it safe.
