What’s In Your Fridge is where the Straight asks interesting Vancouverites about their life-changing concerts, favourite albums, and, most importantly, what’s sitting beside the Heinz ketchup in their custom-made Big Chill Retropolitan 20.6-cubic-foot refrigerators.

      Who are you

Where to start...I’m mostly a professional dabbler, but especially a guitar aficionado and wannabe rockstar. I also enjoy pranking my wife, my son, and our pets at all times. Okay, of course I have a professional life as well—I’m a cognitive performance and injury Coach, speaker, retired NHL player, burn survivor, and a graduate from Brown University—B.Sc Human Biology. And most recently, an author. I just released my book FIGHTER: Defying The NHL Odds, which details my journey from the VGH Burn Unit, where I overcame a life-threatening burn injury, to the NHL, and life after a career-ending neck injury.

      First concert

My parents took me to see Bryan Adams play on the holiday train passing through Revelstoke when I was a young boy. I don’t remember the music per se, but I do remember being blown away by the whole experience. Maybe this was the moment that ignited my passion for music. That, or my dad forcing me to beat pillows and cushions as drums while he played his guitar.

      Life-changing concert

This is a really tough call! I LOVE concerts and live music. If you asked me this a year ago, I would have said an artist in my wheelhouse—’80s hair metal—but I’ve really been into Kip Moore. He’s this perfect hybrid of country and rock, and I don’t think he has one bad song. I saw him play live in Spokane, Washington recently and I was so moved by the performance. My family and I were going through a lot, including my Dad’s battle with ALS, and I just broke down during one of the songs. It was a very powerful experience that I still think about every day.

      Top three records

Led Zeppelin IV I mean it’s Led Zeppelin...the greatest superband of all time.

Black Crowes Shake Your Money Maker I’ve loved the Black Crowes from a young age. They are so unique, and if I hear one of their songs I instantly want to move and/or pick up my guitar. I’ve seen these guys live so many times, and it only gets better and better.

Queen Greatest Hits I saw a Queen tribute band perform when I was a teenager at Nakusp Music Fest. I had always liked them, but after this concert I was obsessed! My son’s love for rock n roll music has also reignited my passion for these guys.

      All-time favourite video

Guns N’ Roses “November Rain” I could watch Slash, my favourite guitarist, wail on a guitar in the wind forever.

      What’s in your fridge

Kimchi. This is the best snack. I love the kick, and I love anything pickled or canned. Also pretty good for you too!

IPAs. My dad hooked me onto these years ago. We usually have a solid selection of IPAs from local breweries to enjoy.

Smoothie supplies. My son is a smoothy feen! So we have to make sure we’re stocked at all times.

Aaron Volpatti’s FIGHTER: Defying The NHL Odds is in bookstores, and available on Amazon, now.
